Recently I participated in the EuroGames 2022. Despite a sub-optimal preparation, I registered. And it was so much fun to participate and I learned so much from it! Unexpectedly, I even earned a bronze medal! More importantly than that, I got to meet a lot of beautiful people and rediscovered my love for martial arts!
The satisfaction of participating
Participating in the EuroGames was a victory for me. Due to lockdowns and closures of sports facilities, I have been unable to fully practice my martial arts in recent years. I could easily have let myself be held back by limiting beliefs: I’m too old now, I haven’t trained enough, I probably can’t keep up with the rest. Fortunately, two organizers convinced me to register anyway! It felt really good to be back on the mat, I made the connection with my younger self again and discovered that I can still keep up with the rest! You are indeed never too old to learn!

It’s better to do something than nothing at all
Imagine that you only start doing something when you really master it 100%. Then little children would never learn to walk! After the first fall the child would say to itself: you can’t do it, never mind, give up! Yet as adults, we do this all too often. It is our fear of failure that sometimes prevents us from even starting something. But only by just doing something, just starting it, can we learn and grow. And if we do fail? Nice! The faster we fail, the faster we learn!
And what if you know in advance that you cannot do something completely right? Perhaps due to a lack of knowledge, skills or time? Then look at it this way: the maxim is that we should brush our teeth for 2 minutes for the best result. However, brushing your teeth for 10 seconds is still better than NOT brushing your teeth at all!
Making an effort
The business world often strives for the best possible solution. And also in coaching you often hear “Be the best version of yourself!”. This implies that there is only one best version of your life and that life is linear. However, life is far from linear and during our lifetime we can develop in several directions. It’s not a path one-way up, there are multiple paths that can all lead to a good, fulfilling version of yourself. From this point of view, “doing your best” is nothing more and nothing less than walking the path you have chosen with the best of intentions.
And what does that actually mean, wanting to be the best version of yourself? Don’t we all strive for happiness, for inner peace? And is it not in the goals we strive for, but in how we are and how we walk our path? From experience I have learned that it is not about achieving goals, but about being authentically yourself. When you can live from your heart, then happiness is within reach.
